Album Review: YBN Cordae's "The Lost Boy"

The last one to join the hip hop group YBN, which stands for Young Boss N****s, includes artists YBN Nahmir, YBN Almighty Jay & YBN Cordae. The three released their YBN: The Mixtape in September of 2018, however, the three plan to release their solo albums throughout 2019. YBN Cordae just dropped his solo album The Lost Boy on July 26, 2019. The 15 song, 45 minute and 17 second project included 6 features from major artists in the game right now. Some of the features include Chance the Rapper, Anderson .Paak, Ty Dolla $ign, Pusha T, Arin Ray & Meek Mill.

Cordae’s debut album has 2 singles that released prior to July 26, 2019, Have Mercy & Bad Idea. The album starts off with Wintertime, a soft melodic track where he speaks about his struggles & his come up in the game. Speaking about waiting tables, struggling with anxiety, social pressure, he shows his skills off like no other on this track.

Have Mercy, a song that released on March 8, 2019, shows off his lyricism with an upbeat tempo. The song had 2 videos released, Path A or Path B. Path A was filmed and edited by Cole Bennett and released on his channel Lyrical Lemonade. Path B was released on YBN Cordae’s channel on April 16, 2019.

Cordae had a lot to prove on this album, and he truly showed his skills throughout each track. He came a long way since his release of “Old N****s" (J. Cole “1985” Response). This was the song that put Cordae on the map, he released the track on March 16, 2018 on Worldstar’s youtube channel which accumulated over 12 million views since release.

The track, Bad Idea (feat. Chance the Rapper) has been an anticipated collaboration between the two. The track samples a track called “Be Real Black for Me” by Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway. The slow, melodic track went with a heartfelt visual

Our favorite track off the album has to be, RNP (feat. Anderson .Paak) which was produced by J. Cole, who is arguably Hip Hops best right now. The three made an upbeat tempo beat where Anderson .Paak & YBN Cordae compliment each others talent while feeding off each others verses. The two performed live on Jimmy Fallon prior to the album release.

There was not one song on this album that needed to be skipped and was composed perfectly, while staying true to the theme of the project. The Lost Boy was the first solo project from the YBN group and we are still early in 2019, so the fans should be very excited for what the rest of the group has to offer on their projects.
